The WhosOn Live chat application is built in ASP.NET, using AJAX to communicate with the visitor. This means that the visitor does not need to download anything to communicate with you!

Program Components

WhosOn Server - Processes, databases, and serves visitor information to connected clients. Distributes chats for sites, and controls permission structures.
WhosOn Gateway - Handles requests that come in from any tagged source (JavaScript tracking, Server-side tracking, ISAPI filter) and queues this to the server. Response is served back to requester containing operator status information.
WhosOn Client - Displays information to user via fast Windows interface. Visitors can be monitored, chatted to, traced, and pro-actively engaged.
WhosOn Report Scheduler - Processes daily, weekly and monthly scheduled reports that are sent out to multiple sites.
WhosOn Webcharts - Displays current visitor data and historical reports via the IIS (ASP.NET 2.0) web application. Fully customisable queries via SQL.

Q: I don't have my own IIS server, do you offer a hosted version?

A: Yes, we have a hosted version of WhosOn, where you simply embed the tracking code in your pages, then you can connect to our server with the WhosOn Client program to view data and chat to visitors. Go to www.whoson.com

Q: Ok, it is a website monitoring tool, but what can I see with it?

A: When a visitor comes onto your site, you can see what they searched for, where they came from, and their Geographical Location. If they have visited before, you can see how they first reached your site, and if they purchased from you. During their visit, you can see each page that they view as soon as they select it.

Q: Does WhosOn track PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns?

A: Yes. WhosOn tracks how visitors get to your site by what we call "Entry Alerts". These alerts can be allocated based on Landing Page, Source URL, Keywords, Geograpical Location and Organisation name. Paid alerts can then be allocated a click cost, and will be reported on in the automated reports.

Q: How many sites can I monitor?

A: With the installable edition, we do not limit the number of sites that you are able to monitor. The only limitation is the processing power of the PC. If the Gateway is used, you can deal with a lot more sites in real-time than with the Log Files. The ISAPI filter gives very performance friendly results with IIS.

Q: What does it mean by '3' users?

A: WhosOn is licensed by Concurrent Operators. This means that the licensing is based on the number of connections with the WhosOn client at any one time. With a 3 user version, you can create as many named users as you wish, and install the client on as many of your employees PCs as you want, but only 3 will be allowed to connect at one time.

Q: Are there other options to the JavaScript tracking?

A: We have tracking that works as JavaScript, Server-Side Code, ISAPI filter, or Logfiles. The Server-Side Code generally provides the highest level of integration with your site, as you can pass through usernames and customer details direct from the business logic. The ISAPI filter provides very quick and easy tracking - it can install for the whole server, and track all the sites that are on it into WhosOn.

Q: I've seen live chat before, but I've never bothered to use it on a website. Is it worthwhile?

A: Internet users are getting more used to websites being treated like a normal shop. You need to grab the attention of the visitor, and if they can't find what they need on your site, you should step up to provide the information. If you send people invites to chat, you can often close a sale given the right wording.
